Curzon Building, Cardigan Street, Birmingham, UK

The YC SCLP Birmingham City University Workshop saw the ongoing commitment of the Youth Charter’s #legacyopportunity4all continue to provide a diverse and inclusive multi-agency stakeholder collaboration that will in turn recruit, select and deploy Social Coaches who will deliver on the Birmingham 2022 pledge to improve the mental, physical and emotional health and wellbeing of young people, in particular those from disadvantaged and disaffected communities.

The Price Waterhouse Cooper Social Coach Leadership workshop delivered in the build up to the Games was subsequently followed by the Wolverhampton Wrestling Club hosted workshop only months after the Games. This provided an ongoing rich currency of the public, private and third sector community organisations that can be mobilised to the benefit of young people and communities in Birmingham, the West Midlands and beyond.

The BCU workshop was the culmination of all of the respective efforts contributed by so many, but importantly following the signing of the Youth Charter Scrolls on September 5th, 2022, at the Youth Legacy Summit. BCU will be a critical partner in providing the academic anchor legacy footprint that will see the research, innovation as well as knowledge experience and commitment provided both on the campus and more importantly beyond the campus as part of their civic and community engagement efforts. This will in turn contribute to the Youth Charter’s #GlobalCall2Action where we aim to develop 50 Community Campuses with 50,000 Social Coaches and impacting 5 million young people directly.

The next step of this ongoing journey of legacy empowerment lies within the students that will be recruited form the community for the community and representative of the community that become part of an intergenerational soft power that is sustainable, evidenced and above all impactful in the social, cultural, and economic life chances of all who will benefit from this collective approach.

As the Youth Charter Marks its 30th anniversary year, there could be no better ongoing example of the art of the possible when the same effort is reflected in the legacy of a major games as is the case in the bidding and hosting of such games.

“If 10% of our volunteering effort that so successfully hosted and represented Birmingham’s bold and big-hearted spirit in the delivery of the Social Coach Programme, then the success of the Games will be matched as a result of the legacy of the Games.”
