The Spirit of Hulme and Moss Side tour of LA in 1994, the IOC's Centenary Year, saw a group 16 young people and 5 Social Coaches from Manchester visit Los Angeles, as an Olympic Truce project aiming to bring Peace to the Streets...
The Spirit of Hulme & Moss Side tour of LA developed out of Manchester’s 2000 Olympic bid, with the Youth Charter and Hulme Regeneration Ltd working in partnership to develop a business partnership for youth and sport in Manchester and the North West, with 35 Public, Private and Third Sector organisations contributing financial and in kind support.
The project was delivered in the IOC’s Centenary Year, in the build up to the Atlanta 1996 Olympic and Paralympic Games, which was to mark the Centenary Year of the Olympic Games. The tour group include IOCMember Dame Mary Glen Haig. The tour group were hosted by the Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles, the LA 84 and the LAPD, including IOC Member Anita DeFrantz.

Education
The Spirit of Hulme and Moss Side tour of LA provided a unique educational learning experience that has help to shape the lives of the participants. The learning experience included sharing and discussing their personal and social experiences of growing up in Manchester with young people and community members from Los Angeles.
Health
The tour included a wide range of Sport, Art and Cultural Activities and celebrated the 100th Anniversary of the establishment of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Citizenship

The tour addressed citizenship issues related to youth violence, gang and gun culture, which the cities of Manchester and Los Angeles had shared experiences of.
This was delivered through a Global Citizenship theme, as part the IOC's 100th Anniversary Celebrations and the United Nation's 1993 Olympic Truce Resolution, with the LA84 Foundation a legacy of the LA 1984 Olympic Games.

The tour visited projects and programmes being delivered at community facilities across south central LA, which were aimed at reducing youth violence, gang and gun culture, and improving community cohesion and quality of life for young people and their community.

The tour supported the young people to aspire for further and higher education, and employment and entrepreneurship opportunities, this included visiting colleges, universities, work places and businesses.

The tour was supported by more than 36 Public, Private and Third Sector organisations with cash donations, in-kind support, equipment, facilities, travel tickets, accommodation, etc.

The tour group participants represented the diverse communities of Hulme and Moss Side who came from disadvantaged and disaffected backgrounds, promoting equality, diversity, inclusion and participation.
