"Great champions are remembered for the medals they win.
The greatest champions are remembered for the lives they inspire."
The Youth Charter proudly celebrates and pays tribute to Dame Sarah Storey - not simply as Britain's most successful Paralympian, but as a lifelong advocate for opportunity, inclusion and the transformative power of sport.
As Dame Sarah announces her retirement from elite competition, the world rightly celebrates an extraordinary sporting career that has redefined excellence across generations. Yet, for the Youth Charter family, her story began long before the podiums, the world records and the honours.

In 1993, as a talented young athlete with immense promise, Sarah stood alongside the Youth Charter at its launch at Wembley. Those early days were filled with ambition, determination and belief that sport could become a catalyst for social change. As the Youth Charter found its voice, Sarah was beginning a remarkable journey that would see her become one of the greatest athletes in sporting history.

Over the following three decades, we have witnessed not only her unparalleled achievements in the swimming pool and on the cycling track, but also her unwavering commitment to using sport as a force for good. Throughout her career, she has exemplified humility, resilience, compassion and leadership—qualities that have inspired countless young people far beyond the arena of elite competition.

One of our enduring memories is of Sarah visiting communities in Moss Side and Toxteth alongside Youth Charter Founder and Executive Chair Professor Geoff Thompson. Rather than simply observing the challenges facing young people, she immersed herself in understanding them. Those visits reflected her belief that sporting success carries with it a responsibility to engage with communities and to create hope where opportunity can often seem out of reach.

Her journey mirrors the values upon which the Youth Charter was founded:
Excellence with humility
Leadership through service
Achievement with purpose
Success measured by social impact
As an athlete, Sarah continually challenged perceptions of disability, age and human potential. As a public figure, she has championed equality, environmental sustainability, active lifestyles and social inclusion. Her influence has extended well beyond sport, demonstrating how elite athletes can become trusted voices in shaping healthier, fairer and more inclusive communities.

For the Youth Charter, Dame Sarah's contribution has never been measured solely in medals. As a longstanding Vice President and Ambassador, she has remained a steadfast supporter of our mission to empower young people through sport, arts, culture and education. Her encouragement of initiatives addressing social exclusion, disadvantage and inequality has embodied the very essence of the Youth Charter's vision.
Retirement from competition is not an end; it is the beginning of another chapter.

The qualities that made Dame Sarah one of the world's greatest athletes are discipline, integrity, courage and compassion and are precisely those that can continue to shape public life, inspire future generations and influence policy for the better.

At a time when society faces increasing challenges around youth wellbeing, mental health, inequality and community cohesion, experienced leaders such as Dame Sarah have an even greater role to play in helping young people realise their potential.

Her legacy reminds us that Champions are not defined only by what they achieve for themselves, but by what they enable others to become.

As the Youth Charter continues its work through the Community Campus, Social Coach Leadership Programme and global movement for sport for development and peace, we remain grateful for Dame Sarah's friendship, leadership and unwavering belief in the power of sport to transform lives.
From all of us at the Youth Charter - Thank you, Dame Sarah Storey for the inspiration, your service and for proving that true greatness is measured not only in medals, but in character, compassion and the lives you continue to touch. Your sporting chapter may have closed, but your leadership journey is only just beginning.
"The podium celebrates achievement.
Communities celebrate humanity.
Dame Sarah Storey has given us both."
